Timecode 2000 (in production in 1999-2000?) (Status Unknown): Oscar-nominated director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) is at it again! And, as usual, he's taking Julian Sands on his latest filmmaking rollercoaster ride. Julian has previously played supporting roles in Figgis' films Leaving Las Vegas (Yuri, the pimp), The Browning Version (Tom Gilbert, the new languages teacher), One Night Stand (Nurse Chris), and, most recently, the lead role of Nic in The Loss of Sexual Innocence.
Figgis' latest film, Timecode 2000, is already making entertainment industry headlines for its groundbreaking use of digital filmmaking and simultaneous, multiple-setting storyline. Figgis is using new, longer-shooting, digital cameras to simultaneously film over 60 minutes of live action at four different locations. When complete, the film from each location will be compiled as four quarter-screen images into a full-screen image, all running simultaneously, as they were filmed. Figgis again pushes the envelope of non-linear storytelling with this technique, which already appears to have some critics baffled. In addition to the unique camera-work, Figgis is also giving the actors only a loose idea about their character and storyline -- from there, it's up to the actor to improvise. They'll also wear their own clothing, rather than being costumed by the production.
As for Julian's co-stars, Figgis has again called upon his lady-love, actress Saffron Burrows, as well as veteran actress Holly Hunter, with whom Julian worked in 1992's Crazy in Love. While Hunter's casting has triggered almost as much buzz as the unique filming techniques, the cast is currently be referred to as "an ensemble". That ensemble also includes Kyle MacLachlan, Salma Hayek, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Steven Weber and Laurie Metcalf. Julian plays a character called "Quentin" or "Q", who is a massage therapist. Clips on the film's official website may shed some more light on just who Quentin is. The general plot of the film seems to take place in the entertainment industry, as main characters are an actress and a movie producer. The specifics of the story, as well as any release dates, are not yet available.
For a week in early November, America OnLine subscribers were offered the unique opportunity to view a live webcast of the filming of Timecode 2000 for an hour each day. No further details at this time on exactly what occurred during these webcasts (or if they actually came about).
