Tale of a Vampire
Tale of a Vampire (1992)...Alex
Plot Synopsis: probably one of the roles Julian is best suited for: the title vampire, with a romantic and thoroughly supernatural plot! There's a mysterious stranger stalking Alex. Or is he stalking the woman who is the mirror image of Alex's centuries' lost love? Or is he just there to help? And what do Alex's dining habits have to do with all of this? There are more twists and turns than in the Minotaur's maze, so if I said any more, it might spoil things for you! ;)
Review:
An interesting take on the character and motivations of the vampire:
rather than portraying him as the traditional molds suggest, as
either an evil, selfish man, or an inhuman monster, Julian rather
portrays Alex as a human-like creature, who is not really human, in
that you cannot forget that he is a vampire, "an inhuman
beast" that holds no compunctions about killing for blood. He
keeps feeding separate from his emotions, but those very
extraordinarily human emotions drive him to extremes that no mortal
man would take. It is more precise to compare this vampire to humans
by looking at him as another humanoid species with different
requirements of existence, rather than as a monster. Therefore, while
it is still repellant to see him kill and feed, it is no more so than
to see an animal kill. And, above all else, he is driven by the needs
of deep love. All of this adds up to a story that pulls you in much
like Alex pulls in Ann.
Availability: amazingly widely available! You won't find it in your average video store, not even to rent, but many larger stores carry it in stock or can order it. Buy It.
The horror magazine Shivers had a great article about the making of this film in 1992. It does reveal a few of the plot twists, but if you don't mind, click here to read it. (Thanks to Kate for providing the text and pictures!)
