Plot Synopsis: Based on a Tolstoy novel. Julian plays Baron Sergio Giuramondo, a noble at the court of King Charles III of Naples, bound for a brilliant career and about to marry into an illustrious family. On the eve of his wedding to the Duchess Cristina Del Carpio, he discovers that his fiancée has been the king's lover. He leaves Naples and becomes a monk. But not even life in the church gives him peace. Spurred by pride and at the same time by the need for the absolute, he makes another radical choice: he goes to Mount Petra to become a hermit.

A lovely, but promiscuous woman called Aurelia, for a bet, visits his hermitage to tempt him. Father Sergio responds by dramatically thwarting his desires, and the woman, spurred by his austere example, reforms her ways. News of his holiness spreads far and wide. Among the many pilgrims that flock the mountain to visit him is a mentally disturbed girl called Matilda who finally breaks his resistance. This causes Sergio to despair. He runs away and attempts suicide. But a strong sense of vitality brings him back to the land of his childhood.

Availability: as of November 1999, Night Sun has finally been released in the US on VHS video. This is the British version, in Italian with English subtitles. While Julian's voice has been dubbed in by an Italian actor, the limited dialogue of the Tolstoy story allows Julian's acting to shine nonetheless. It's well worth the viewing. Also for rental, in French, no subtitles, and may be available for sale in the U.K. in PAL (not VHS compatible) format.
