The Doctor & The Devils
Doctor and the Devils, The (1985)...Doctor Murray
Plot Synopsis: A thoughtful, Dickensian-style thriller about a doctor who hires a pair of thugs to bring him the newly dead so that he can use their corpses for medical research. When they get desperate for money, things spin out of his control. But do the ends justify the means? Set in 19th century Victorian England. Julian as the doctor's assistant in the film adapted from a Dylan Thomas script.
Review: (yet another doctor -- I'm starting to wonder that Julian's never actually played Dr. Frankenstein... makes you wonder how The Bride would have gone with a slight casting change... I do think Sting did a wonderful job in the role, though.) Anyway, it's not quite as morbid or gory as I'd feared from the plot synopsis -- definitely a fresh twist on the Frankenstein model, with Timothy Dalton as the science-mad anatomist, and Stephen Rea as one of the thugs who goes more than a little overboard to collect his per-corpse pay. Julian's love-interest is tavern-wench Twiggy.
As would be suggested by it being adapted from a Dylan Thomas story, it's rather a good and interesting plot, if a bit too reminiscent in theme of Frankenstein. And while I'm not terribly fond of Timothy Dalton or Twiggy, everyone in the film does a rather decent job of acting. Over all, surprisingly watchable, but not terribly enthralling.
